A democratic space at the heart of Berlin
Tempelhofer Feld
Tempelhofer Feld, one of the world’s largest open urban spaces, has remained a fiercely contested site since its closure as an airport in 2008. In collaboration with Some Place Studio and Natural Resource Manager Shalini Vimal, the team developed a winning proposal for the open international competition, selected from 164 entries.
The design firmly resists new construction, instead offering a vision that preserves and enhances the Feld’s ecological, social, and spatial qualities. The project translates years of public input into a cohesive, actionable strategy—removing paved surfaces to restore soil health, introducing climate-resilient planting, and adapting existing buildings for public use.
Ultimately, the proposal views Tempelhofer Feld not as a static monument, but as a place of continuous and communal stewardship. To protect the Feld is not to halt its evolution, but to support and amplify its existing qualities, acting as an example for other major cities in a time of climate change, overheating and species endangerment.
